DNA Collection of Migrants

It was announced on Wednesday, October 3, 2019, by the Trump administration that they will be expanding their DNA collection samples process from migrants apprehended by immigration authorities. The DNA samples will be entered into a national criminal database in order to keep tabs on the migrants. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that the Justice department is in the process of developing a federal regulation essentially giving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials “authority to collect DNA in detention facilities across the country.” A staff lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union’s Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project, Vera Eidelman stated, “That kind of mass collection alters the purpose of DNA collection from one of criminal investigation basically to population surveillance, which is basically contrary to our basic notions of a free, trusting, autonomous society.” Only time will tell if this new change will bring any positive change to the immigration system.
