Beto O’Rourke’s Proposed Immigration Reform

Beto O’Rourke, 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, revealed his new proposed immigration plan on May 29, 2019. Due to his extensive knowledge, experience and understanding of the immigration system at the border, Beto O’Rourke believes that “his border roots make him the best candidate to roll back Trump administration policies.” His goal is to lead major changes to the United States immigration system. If elected president, Beto O’Rourke stated that during his first 100 days in office he would focus on three immigration objectives: 1) use executive authority to reverse the Trump administration’s immigration policies, 2) seize construction of the U.S.-Mexico border wall and 3) remove the fear of deportation for Dreamers, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and deferred enforced departure programs. Reuniting families, simplifying the naturalization process and creating an “earned pathway to citizenship” for roughly 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States are just a few things O’Rourke is promising to fix. He is also vowing to provide a quicker pathway to citizenship for those given Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and people in programs like Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).

“As a fourth-generation El Pasoan, Beto uniquely recognizes the urgency of fixing our broken immigration and naturalization system…Rooted in his experience serving the largest binational community in the Western Hemisphere – one that draws its strength and prosperity from its rich heritage of welcoming immigrants – Beto is proposing a new path forward to ensure we honor our laws, live up to our values, and once again harness the power of a new generation of immigration toward our shared prosperity.” Beto O’Rourke has spent nearly his entire life living in El Paso, Texas which gives him first hand insight as to how the current immigration system is failing not only its immigrants but its citizens of the United States. Instead of ‘ending’ immigration in the United States, O’Rourke sees the problem and is willing to fix it because he understands its importance in our country. Beto O’Rourke’s immigration plan, or as he calls it “In Our Own Image” is without a doubt a step in the right direction. You can’t deny his dedication to solving our broken immigration system.
